| After Tooth Extraction | After an extraction, it is very important for a blood clot to create in order to stop the bleeding and start the healing process. For this reason your dentist will ask you to bite on a gauze pad during the following 30 to 45 minutes after an extraction. If bleeding or oozing lasts after you remove the gauze pad, take another gauze pad on the area and bite tightly during another 30 minutes. Sometimes it happens that you may have to do this several times.
After the blood clot creates, you have to provide proper protection for it, particularly for the next 24 hours. It is very important not to:
smoke and chew tobacco
consume alcohol drinks
drink with a help of a straw
rinse your mouth energetically
clean the teeth close to the extraction site
The reason for not doing these activities is the following – they could remove the clot and hold back your healing process.
Restrict yourself to calm down activities for the initial 24 hours. This maintains your blood pressure lower, decreases bleeding, and assists the healing process.
After the tooth is removed, you may feel some pain and have some swelling. You can put an ice bag for 20 minutes on your chick in order to keep this to a minimum. The swelling usually begins to go down after 48 hours.
To manage discomfort, take pain medication as advised. Remember that you shouldn’t take medication on an empty stomach because nausea may occur. If antibiotics are prescribed, go on to take them for the indicated length of time, even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone.
Also you should do the following:
drink lots of fluids
eat only soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction
keep away from hot and spicy foods
refuse from alcoholic beverages
