| FAQs | How do whitening toothpastes work and how effecting are they at whitening teeth? Mild abrasives, which are the basic ingredients of all toothpastes, help to remove stains from the surfaces of the teeth. In addition to these abrasives, there are chemical agents or gentle polishing, contained in some whitening toothpastes, which help to provide additional stain removal effectiveness. It should also be noted, that over – the – counter whitening toothpastes can help to remove stains from the surfaces of the teeth only, and there is no bleach, contained in them; it is considered, that whitening toothpastes can make the tooth’s color about one shade lighter. As for the professional whitening products, they can make the teeth three to eight shades lighter. This effect is possible because of hydrogen peroxide, a special bleaching substance, contained in them. With the help of this substance, it is possible to remove all the stains from the surfaces of the teeth, as well as stains, located deep in the tooth. And there is no home application whitening toothpaste, which can come even close to special bleaching products, people can only get from their dentist’s office through chairside bleaching or powder bleaching.
What teeth shape changing options are available? There are several different options available for people, who wish to have the shape of their teeth changed, make their teeth look longer, repair chipped or cracked teeth, as well as to close the spaces between teeth.
Among these options are the following ones:
Dental bonding It is a procedure, during which a tooth – colored resin material is applied to the surface of a tooth and then it is hardened on it with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth surface.
Dental crowns These are so – to – say “cups”, which are made in the shape of a tooth. Dental crowns are place over the teeth. When they are cemented into place, they fully encase the entire visible part of a tooth, which is located at and above the gum line.
Veneers (they are also called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) Veneers are wafer – thin, custom – made shells of tooth – colored materials, which are designed with the aim of covering the front surface of teeth. Veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth.
Recontouring or reshaping of the teeth (the procedure is also called odontoplasty, enameloplasty, stripping or slenderizing) This is the procedure, during which small amounts of tooth enamel are removed in order to change the length, surface or shape of a tooth.
Each of the above described options differ regarding to its cost, “chair time”, durability, stain resistant qualities, necessity to complete, and best cosmetic approach to resolving some specific problem.
